Adirondack snowshoeing is a wonderful complement to Cross Country Skiing, and you can enjoy both activities here at Lapland Lake! Olavi has designed 12km of marked and mapped dedicated snowshoe trails that meander throughout our more than 200 privately-owned acres.
Snowshoeing terrain ranges from flat to rolling hills to steep grades. You will snowshoe through thick forests of pine, hemlock and hardwoods. Our trails occasionally take you over small bridges which pass over gorgeous creeks and streams.
You may also opt to head off our property onto state-owned wilderness land. The Benson trailhead of the 132-mile Northville-Lake Placid Trail is only a mile from Lapland Lake. This marked trail is a wonderful place to snowshoe (and to Cross Country Ski). We recommend you sign in at the trailhead. Additionally, the 10km loop to Grant Lake, which may be accessed from our property, is a wonderful outing. If you plan to snowshoe off our premises, we advise informing Ski Shop personnel where you are headed and when you expect to return.
If there is Fresh Snow, you will be certain to enjoy identifying the many animal tracks that you will see along the way.
You may bring your own snowshoes or rent them from us. We carry a variety of manufacturers’ snowshoes including Tubbs, Havlick’s, Atlas and Little Bear for both children and adults.
Snowshoe Rentals are $18 for adults and youth (ages 12-17) and $12 for juniors. After 2pm there is a $2 discount. If you have already rented equipment in a given day, you may take advantage of our Rental Interchange Program. Customers who have paid the full day’s rental rate on any set of rental gear may exchange their rental gear one time for no additional charge (i.e., skis for snowshoes). The highest rental rate prevails.
Snowshoes allow your weight to be distributed over a larger area so you float on the snow rather than sinking into it. Snowshoes come equipped with bindings that strap on over your own winter boots. We recommend wearing insulated, waterproof boots rather than ski boots (which are not designed for use with snowshoes). Gaiters are helpful to prevent snow from falling into your boots.
Snowshoeing is an aerobic sport, so you may find you will want to remove layers as you exercise. Taking along a rucksack and dressing in breathable layers, as you would for cross country skiing, is recommended. Be certain to pack a camera along with liquids and healthy snacks for your Adirondack snowshoe outing!
Weight and snow conditions will determine which snowshoe from our inventory will work best for you. Our staff will be happy to assist with fitting your boots into the snowshoe bindings. Some snowshoe enthusiasts prefer to use poles for additional balance. If you would like poles to use, please ask. There is no additional charge for rental of poles when you rent snowshoes from us.Adirondack Snowshoeing at Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center
Snowshoeing is yet another wonderful way to enjoy a crisp winter’s day here in our winter wonderland. Enjoy!
Please note: Snowshoeing is not permitted on our cross country ski trails (except where crossing a ski trail is necessary). Use of snowshoes will damage the groomed area of the Ski Trails and will negatively impact our cross country skiers’ experience. We thank you in advance for your consideration.
