Choosing A Carpenter
Posted by Ernie

Just about anyone can swing a hammer, but skilled carpentry work requires knowledge of materials, ability to read design plans and often the ability to design, a good work ethic, safety, a thorough knowledge of building codes, experience, experience, experience.

How do you decide which carpenter you should hire?

Word of mouth is a good start, and mutually beneficial to the client and the carpenter. I like to know what my clients will be like as much as they want to know what to expect from me. Frankly, a good recommendation from a family member, trusted friend or associate is worth a dozen unverifiable references. Absent that, get those references and, above anything else, meet your carpenter in person. You’ll get more useful information from a face to face meeting.

Be specific with the job you need and then get a clear estimate of the job to be performed. You’ll want to confirm:

  • Who will be obtaining the materials needed for the job;

  • How quantities of materials will be determined;

  • What factors may delay the job (i.e., bad weather, unavailability of materials, etc.);

  • Who will handle carting away discarded materials, appliances, cabinetry and other rubbish;

  • Whether materials and clean ups are included in the job quote;

  • How long it will take, absent unforeseen delays, to complete your project.

  • I don’t know a lot of skilled carpenters who have the time to develop a portfolio showcasing their work. Occasionally, they may obtain permission from owners, take a snapshot and have something to show for hours of labor. Either way, definitely ask whether a portfolio is available; but the lack of a portfolio shouldn’t keep you from hiring a carpenter by any means.
