About the Shrine

The National Shrine of the North American Martyrs is situated in the heartland of New York State, in the Diocese of Albany. The Shrine is the site of the America's first and only canonized Martyrs: St. Rene Goupil (1642), Jesuit brother: St. Isaac Jogues (1646), Jesuit priest: and St. John Lalande (1646), lay missioner. Here is the birthplace of the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, the Lily of the Mohawks, born at Ossernenon in 1656, just ten years after these Martyrdoms.

The Shrine is also the center of devotion to Mary because it was on the grounds that the first recorded recitation of the Rosary in what is now New York State took place - on September 29, 1642. Nearly two and one-half centuries later when Ossernenon was rediscovered, the Shrine of 1884 was appropriately dedicated to Our Lady of Martyrs. Truly, here the blood of Martyrs was the seed of Christians in North America.
