Great Sacandaga Lake Turkey Season

By the Walleye Wizard

Turkey Season is about to open (May) and with the light winter the Turkey flocks around the Great Sacandaga lake area are in real good shape. Several people have already noted that the gobblers have been chasing the hens. Hopefully for the Turkey hunter the hens will be on the nests leaving the Gobblers for them to call and not be in competition with the hens.

State Land and Forests, plus other open to hunting land exists in close proximity to the great Sacandaga Lake. Just west of Gloversville, you have a couple of pieces of state land as well as off Route 125 between Benson and Caroga Lake. Several big flocks exist in these areas, Just south, you have Charleston SF, and east off of Fox Hill Road you have more State Land. North you have unlimited State and other public excess areas in the Adirondacks that hold Turkey in easy driving distance from the Great Sacandaga Lake Area.

Here are a couple of useful tips to help bag your Turkey:

Hunters tend to call too much, and use the same yelping sequence.
Learn to softly use the “cut, putt, or whine” when the gobbler gets close.

Your setup location can be the key to keep the gobbler from hanging up!
Try finding an area that has an opening out in front of you. They like to strut their stuff in these open areas in hope that a female is watching. An open area can be as big as a field or as small as a car.

Many people are not sure when to shoot, “ is he close enough?”
If you clearly see his eyes, SHOOT!
Have an enjoyable and safe hunt!
